Academics: World Languages The World Language Department offers academic and honors level courses in French, Spanish and Latin. In addition, Advanced Placement courses are offered to recommended students in all three languages. All students are required to take a minimum of two consecutive years of a world language. Whenever possible, students are encouraged to continue with the third and fourth year of the language. The courses emphasize reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students are encouraged to comprehend the target language through the use of CD and DVD resources. By teaching and assessing all four language skills, the language department provides the students with the opportunity to achieve proficiency in their target language. Cultural enrichment is provided in each course through various readings and films. As students come to express themselves in the target language, they are better prepared to face challenges in an increasingly global society. To enhance cultural awareness, the French and Spanish clubs have sponsored field trips to music festivals, dance performances, plays and ethnic restaurants. Students have also had the opportunity to travel to France, Canada, Spain, Quebec, and Costa Rica. |
